Hartfield Academy Athletes Sign with Community College Football Teams

February 5th, 2020 was signing day for standout Hartfield Football athletes Eli Gooden and Erick Short. Gooden and Short have signed letters of intent for college play with East Central Community College and Hinds Community College, respectively.
Eli Gooden was a 4-year starter with the Hartfield Hawks football team and was also chosen as District MVP Lineman on both offense and defense. This season, he secured 43 tackles, nine tackles for loss, and two sacks. According to Head Football Coach Jeff McFerran, Gooden was the cornerstone of the offensive line and helped gain yards when the team needed them most. “Eli was an undeniable leader of our team this season,” added McFerran, when describing the athlete’s legacy at Hartfield Academy.

Erick Short, a strong utility player for the Hawks, was the District MVP of the Defensive Skill position players. During the 2019 season, Short had 32 receptions for 572 yards and seven touchdowns, and rushed for an average of 16 yards per carry. Every Hartfield football fan could tell you that Short was an electric presence on and off the field every Friday night. “Erick is the kind of player who makes games exciting. You just can’t wait to see what he will do when the ball is in his hands,” said Coach McFerran.

Hartfield Academy is proud to launch Eli Gooden and Erick Short into the next step of their academic and athletic careers.
