Hartfield Students Triumph in 2019 Youth Legislature Competition

Hartfield Academy’s Youth Legislature Club attended their Annual Conference on Thursday, November 14th and Friday, November 15th. For the second year in a row, Hartfield was named Premier Delegation for the conference, and several students won individual awards.
Mississippi Youth Legislature is a model legislative body for High School Students grades 9th-12th. For this one-of-a-kind conference, students from public and private schools across the state come together at the Mississippi State Capitol and participate in a mock legislative session. Each student had the opportunity to compete as a legislator, lobbyist, press delegate, or legislative page. The Youth Legislature students also took part in delegation and lobbying sessions where they wrote and defended a piece of legislation. Of the thirteen bills our students submitted, nine were passed by the Legislature, with five bills being signed by the Youth Governor.

  • David Dick, Elected Secretary of the Senate for 2020-2021
  • Sohan Patel, Jesse Ishee, Megan McMinn, and Jack Gaskin, Outstanding Representatives
  • Pierce Hayden, David Dick, and Lorelai Hayden, Outstanding Senators
  • Mary Presley and Seth Drake, Delegate Advisor awards
  • Jackson Sykes, Outstanding Lobbyist Award
 
The Youth Legislature Program allows students to gain an in-depth knowledge of our state’s political and legislative systems. After two days of hard work and tremendous fun, Hartfield students who participated in this special Conference have come back to school with a greater appreciation and understanding for how an idea becomes a law.
