Athletic Director Announcement from David Horner: Welcome to David Sykes!
Hartfield Academy Community,
I'm pleased to share an exciting announcement regarding our Athletics department. As most of you know Jim Delaughter, our High School Principal, has willingly and selflessly agreed to lead our athletic staff and programs as the interim Athletic Director this year. He has done an outstanding job, for which we are all grateful. After the recent weekend in which three of our Varsity teams competed in State Championship games, Hartfield is in position to be the recipient of the 4A All-Sports Trophy which is given to the school with the highest level of success in each classification. This will be the first time Hartfield Academy receives this recognition.
Although we are grateful for the successful year, it was never the plan to have Mr. DeLaughter continue in this role long-term. His desire and focus continues to be fully on our Upper School. Given the ongoing needs of our coaches, athletes and programs of our growing school, it is time for us to fill this position. The process for considering our next Athletic Director has been God-led and we are confident this is a growth opportunity for our programs and school.
This morning we introduced David Sykes as our next Athletic Director to our coaching staff and leadership team. David is an accomplished administrator with over 40 years of experience in MAIS schools, most recently as the Head Football coach-turned-Athletic Director for Jackson Academy over the past 15 years. In his coaching career, David coached three teams to win State Championships and was inducted into the MAIS Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 2013.
David brings with him strong school leadership experience, an understanding and appreciation for the specific mission of Hartfield, and plenty of excitement about being a part of all God is doing here as he seeks to lead coaches spiritually and professionally. Due to the year-round nature of Hartfield Athletics, we are expecting Coach Sykes to join our leadership team starting as early as late Spring or early Summer. As with any new leader, there will be the necessary time of understanding all that comes with a new culture and community, but I anticipate that he will be leading well very soon. Please join me in welcoming him when you have the opportunity.
Hartfield Academy is fully accredited by both the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS), the MidSouth Association of Independent Schools (MAIS), the Association of Christian Schools International (ACSI) and the Southern Association of independent Schools (SAIS).
