Hartfield Athletics Shares a Hartfield Boys Basketball Announcement

To the Parents of Hartfield Boys Basketball Players and Overall School Community,
On a recent trip out of state, I found myself in a conversation sharing all that makes our home in Mississippi a great place to live and raise a family.  Among many other elements, high school sports ranks among the top ways our community comes together and feels united, bringing a great deal of joy and accomplishment to our families and students.  I am grateful for a fantastic group of leaders among our teams at Hartfield and I am excited to introduce you to a new coach that will add to our school and mission.
Before doing so, I must thank Coach Steven Makamson for his outstanding service to Hartfield and our boys basketball program. We are grateful for the manner in which he has led our program, and it is impossible to forget the many lives impacted by his leadership over the past seven years.  If you would like to see the message he shared last week with his players and families regarding his decision to step away from coaching, please click here. We wish him the very best and are thankful the Makamsons will remain an integral part of our community, with his children attending Hartfield for years to come.
It is my pleasure to introduce Coach Bill Ball as the next head coach for our boys basketball program at Hartfield.  Coach Ball has the knowledge and experience to continue building on the proud tradition that persists in our basketball program.  He is an intense competitor with a proven track record of developing teams and players, mentoring young men, and building a community of support for a program.
There are many things I could share about Bill, but I will first let his experience speak for itself. In 23 years of coaching, Ball comes with an impressive resume, including a head coach position for a  NCAA Division II team in Arkansas, an assistant role at Mississippi State University, 18 years at Jackson Academy as their head coach, and has served most recently as head coach  at Starkville Academy.  It is one thing to have many years doing a job, but it’s an entirely different experience to be successful at it.  Bill Ball has been extremely successful at every place he has served.  Among his highlights are a 570-159 record as a head coach, two MAIS Overall Championships, four State Championships, two Coach of the Year awards, and multiple records held (including the most wins in Jackson Academy history).
I not only can speak to Coach Ball’s ability from the perspective of a basketball fan and observer, but I spent many years competing directly against his teams as a coach as well. It is an understatement to say his teams were always prepared, and he always maximized whatever level of talent was present on his teams. I can affirm from personal experience that Bill’s approach to leading our teams in the future will be one that fits with the mindset, mission, and expectations that represent our school.  I am proud to have Coach Bill Ball leading our team!
Coach Ball is married to Kameron and they have two children, a married daughter and a high school son who will be attending Hartfield.
Please join me in welcoming Coach Ball as you see him on campus in the coming weeks and months. He is extremely excited about this next chapter in his career and I am proud to introduce him to our entire Hartfield community. A team meeting will be scheduled for this coming Friday afternoon with our Junior High and Varsity Basketball team where we can introduce him to the players. We are confident that even in the midst of change and transition, there is a bright future ahead for all of our athletic programs.

Have a great day and Let’s Go Hawks!
