Hartfield Academy 7th Graders Immerse Themselves in Nature at McDowell Environmental Center in Nauvoo, AL
Hartfield Academy 7th graders embarked on a journey of exploration during their visit to the McDowell Environmental Center in Nauvoo, Alabama last week. The trip was a perfect opportunity for our students to connect with the environment and delve into the center's innovative programs, which align with its core mission: to increase awareness and understanding of the environment, encourage a sense of responsibility for the environment, foster cooperation, and promote the idea of community.
The McDowell Environmental Center served as the ideal backdrop for the students to gain a deeper appreciation of the world around them. The students were excited to experience the center's programs, which take place outdoors, allowing them to see and feel exactly what they were being taught.
One of the core objectives of the MEC's programs is to instill a sense of responsibility for the environment, and Hartfield students embraced this goal wholeheartedly. Throughout their visit, students were actively involved in various activities that enriched their understanding of environmental conservation and sustainability. They engaged in Aquatic Adventures, where they explored streams and hunted for macroinvertebrates, deepening their understanding of aquatic ecosystems and the importance of clean water.
The students also participated in canoeing and hiking, enabling them to appreciate the beauty of nature and discuss God's creation from a biblical worldview. These experiences provided them with a unique perspective on their role as stewards of the environment.
Team building exercises were a significant part of the program, emphasizing cooperation and the idea of community. These activities not only promoted unity among the students but also taught them valuable life skills that extend beyond the classroom.
Additionally, the invention convention activities allowed students to apply their creativity and problem-solving skills to address real-world environmental challenges. This experience empowered them with a sense of agency and the knowledge that they can contribute to solving environmental issues.
The climbing wall, trust swing, and power pole challenges offered thrilling opportunities for students to overcome fears and build self-confidence while reinforcing the importance of trust and teamwork. During a night of debriefing, students talked about overcoming fears and continued to reference Isaiah 41:10 - “Fear not, for I am with you. I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”
Thank you, McDowell Environmental Center, for a transformative experience for our students!
