On Friday, February 21, Hartfield High School achieved a historic milestone, securing 2nd place in the Regional Science Bowl held at Mississippi University for Women in Columbus.

A total of 14 Hatfield students competed in the event, forming three of the 24 teams that participated. Schools from Oxford, Tupelo, Kosciusko, Ocean Springs, Pontotoc, and the Mississippi School for Mathematics and Science (MSMS) also took part in the competition.

Hatfield’s Team 1—led by team captain Savannah Woods and consisting of Levi Hill, Hayden McMinn, Eli Daspit, and Sam Holley—advanced to the final round against MSMS 1, the tournament’s longstanding champion.

This 2nd-place finish marks the best performance in Hatfield’s history, surpassing the school’s previous record of reaching the quarterfinals.

Team sponsor Dr. Kimberly Simpson expressed her pride in the students, stating,

“The team worked well together and used each other as a resource for more difficult bonus questions, especially in areas related to physics and energy. I could not be more proud of our team!”

The team’s success was aided by a technology grant from the Hatfield Parents’ Association, awarded in December, which funded the purchase of an official buzzer system—the same one used in the actual competition.

“I really do believe that having a buzzer system of our own during practice sessions played a crucial role in our team’s success,” Dr. Simpson said.

She concluded,

“Our faculty works incredibly hard to provide our students with a stellar education, and the fact that we were able to compete at this level—against a top-tier math and science school—speaks volumes about the quality of education our students receive.”
