Ellie Pettus: Christian Leader of the Future

Defined as “an opportunity to highlight Christ-followers in Mississippi who have exemplified the character and servant leadership of Jesus in their lives.”, being named a Christian Leader of the Future is certainly an honor for Ellie Pettus.
We had the opportunity to ask Ellie a few questions and were so encouraged by her answers!

What does being a Christian mean to you?
Being a Christian, in Ellie’s words, is about choosing Jesus every single day. She shared that it’s not about being perfect, but about trusting God and allowing Him to shape her life. Her faith influences the way she thinks, the choices she makes, and how she treats others. When life feels stressful or confusing, she strives to lean on God instead of trying to handle everything on her own. More than anything, Ellie desires for her life to reflect Christ in a real and genuine way.

What extracurricular activities are you involved in? Any leadership roles?
Ellie has been an active member of the Hartfield Varsity Dance Team and served as a senior captain this year. In that role, she has learned how to lead by example, stay disciplined, and support her team while maintaining a positive attitude. There are all qualities that reflect both strong leadership and servant-hearted character.

What encouraged you to apply?
Ellie said she applied because she wants to grow as a leader and use her influence in a positive way. She also shared her desire to represent Christ well and encourage others to do the same.

Who, at Hartfield, has encouraged you in your walk with the Lord the most?
Ellie expressed gratitude for Mrs. Ownby, her English teacher, who has been a constant source of support and encouragement. She also shared how Mr. Shackelford, her Bible teacher, has helped her grow spiritually by challenging her to think more deeply about her faith and apply it to real life.

How has Hartfield played a role in your personal faith?
Ellie shared that Hartfield has strengthened her faith by keeping Christ at the center of everyday life. Being in an environment where faith is discussed openly has pushed her to take her relationship with God more seriously and grow in her walk with Him!

What are some daily examples of ways you live for Jesus?
For Ellie, living for Jesus shows up in the small, everyday choices. How she talks about others, how she responds when stressed, and choosing patience over attitude. She strives to be someone who brings peace and makes others feel loved and valued. Even when she falls short, she takes responsibility, apologizes, and keeps growing, rather than letting her faith be just a label.

What were your emotions when you found out you were named a Christian Leader of the Future?
Ellie said she felt incredibly honored and grateful. She was excited and thankful that her words and heart were recognized through this opportunity.

What are your plans after graduation?
Ellie plans to attend Ole Miss and major in psychology. She has always had a heart for helping people and shared that her grandmother (who she jokingly calls her “unpaid therapist”) has been a big inspiration behind her desire to pursue this field.

We are so proud of Ellie and the way she lives out her faith with authenticity. She is a beautiful example of Christlike leadership, and this recognition is so well deserved!
