First Graders Learn the Gospel Through a Pumpkin Carving

This fall, our first graders took part in a unique pumpkin carving. What made the experience unique was how each step of carving the pumpkin pointed students to Jesus and the message of the Gospel.
As students worked through The Pumpkin Prayer, they connected each part of the pumpkin to a spiritual truth, opening the top to ask God to open their minds, cleaning out the inside to represent forgiveness of sin, and carving eyes, ears, a cross-shaped nose, and a fish-shaped mouth to reflect seeing God’s love, hearing His Word, and sharing Him with others. The project concluded by placing a candle inside the pumpkin, reminding students to let God’s light shine in all they say and do.

This messy lesson was a sweet and memorable way for first graders to learn about Jesus while celebrating the fall season! It was so neat to see that even a pumpkin can tell a powerful story!
